Earthquake Shakes Chile: 7.4-Magnitude Tremor Felt Widely

Epicenter Near Deserted Coastal Area, No Immediate Reports of Damage

USGS Warns of Potential Aftershocks, Residents Urged to Be Prepared

A major earthquake struck Chile on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The 7.4-magnitude tremor occurred near the northern coastal region of Antofagasta at around 11:30 pm local time.

Initial reports indicate that the earthquake was felt widely throughout the region, including in the cities of Antofagasta, Mejillones, and Taltal. However, there have been no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

The USGS has issued a warning that aftershocks are likely to occur in the coming days, and has urged residents to be prepared. Local authorities are carrying out assessments of the earthquake's impact, and emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 60 kilometers from the small coastal town of Mejillones, an area that is sparsely populated. This may have contributed to the lack of significant damage or injuries reported thus far.

Chile is situated in a seismically active region along the Pacific Ring of Fire, and experiences frequent earthquakes. The country has a robust emergency preparedness system in place, and authorities are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of residents.
