Magnitude 7.2 Quake Triggers Tsunami Warning

At Least Eight Injured, Tremors Felt as Far as Lima

A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Peru, injuring at least eight people and triggering a tsunami warning. The quake struck early Friday morning at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles), according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). The epicenter was located about 118 kilometers (73 miles) southwest of the port city of Pisco.

The quake sent tremors as far as the capital city of Lima, where residents reported feeling strong shaking. The IGP has issued a tsunami warning for the Peruvian coast, and authorities are urging residents to evacuate to higher ground.

The Peruvian Center for Emergency Operations (CENSIS) has reported that at least eight people have been injured in the quake. The injuries are said to be non-life threatening. There are no immediate reports of any deaths.

The earthquake is the strongest to hit Peru since a 7.9 magnitude quake struck the country in 2007. That quake killed over 500 people and caused widespread damage.
