Breaking: Diamondbacks' Kelly Traded to Rangers in Six-Player Deal

Diamondbacks Part Ways with Kelly in Roster Shakeup

In a significant roster move, the Arizona Diamondbacks have traded right-handed pitcher Merrill Kelly to the Texas Rangers. The deal, which was announced on Sunday, brings six players to the Diamondbacks in return for Kelly.

Rangers Acquire Experienced Starter

Kelly, 29, has emerged as a reliable starter for the Diamondbacks over the past three seasons. In 2023, he compiled a record of 13-12 with a 4.36 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in 33 starts.

The move strengthens the Rangers' pitching rotation, which has struggled to find consistency in recent seasons.

Diamondbacks Receive Six Players

In exchange for Kelly, the Diamondbacks acquired right-handed pitcher Avery Weems, right-handed pitcher Rylan Bannon, infielder Ezequiel Duran, outfielder Justin Foscue, outfielder Matt Whatley, and a player to be named later.

Weems and Bannon are both highly regarded prospects in the Rangers' minor league system.

Managerial Reactions

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo expressed confidence in the future of the team despite the loss of Kelly.

"Merrill has been a valuable member of our rotation," Lovullo said. "However, this trade allows us to acquire some young talent and reshape our team for the upcoming season."

Rangers manager Chris Woodward praised Kelly's addition to the roster.

"Merrill brings a wealth of experience and stability to our rotation," Woodward said. "We are excited to have him join our team and contribute to our success."

Trade Implications

The trade has implications for both teams. The Diamondbacks free up some payroll flexibility and acquire young players who could contribute in the future.

The Rangers improve their pitching staff but may have sacrificed some depth in their farm system.
